Đakovo Cathedral, Cathedral in Đakovo, Croatia
Đakovo Cathedral is a Romanesque Revival cathedral with two symmetrical towers rising 84 meters high and a red brick exterior featuring fine ornamental details. The interior contains a spacious nave with carefully designed areas and an impressive chancel.
Construction began in 1866 under Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer and took 16 years to complete the structure and interior finishing. This ambitious project reflected ecclesiastical renewal and left a lasting mark in the region.
The interior displays extensive fresco paintings showing Old Testament scenes along the nave and portrayals of Saint Peter in the chancel. These artworks shape the spiritual experience and reflect the artistic vision of those who commissioned the building.
The building sits centrally in Đakovo and is easily reached on foot. Visitors can explore the interior and attend services throughout the week, or use guided tours to learn about the artworks and architectural details.
Artworks by German and Italian artists Alexander Maximilian and Lodovico Seitz were created using drawings from the Nazarene movement. This collaboration of European artists gives the interior a distinctive artistic depth.
