Krndija, Rural settlement in Punitovci, Croatia.
Krndija is a settlement in Osijek-Baranja County in eastern Croatia, situated on agricultural land near the River Vuka. The village lies roughly 17 kilometers from Đakovo and connects to nearby towns such as Gorjani, Budimci, and Punitovci through county roads.
The settlement was founded in 1883 when Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer invited German settlers from Bačka to establish themselves here. The community grew to roughly 1500 residents by the 1930s before facing hardship during the post-war period.
The Exaltation of the Holy Cross Church forms the focal point of the settlement, built in 1937 and restored in 2003. It reflects the religious tradition that shapes community life here.
The settlement is rural and accessed by local roads connecting to surrounding villages and regional centers. Spring or autumn offers the most pleasant conditions for visiting when the weather is mild and agricultural activities are visible in the landscape.
A memorial at the cemetery honors those who died when the settlement served as an internment camp from 1945 to 1946. This lesser-known chapter left a lasting mark on the community's story.
