Svetac, Remote island in Split-Dalmatia County, Croatia.
Svetac is an island in Split-Dalmatia County, lying isolated off the Dalmatian coast. It has steep cliffs, a rocky shoreline, and rises to its highest point at about 316 meters above sea level.
Families like the Zanki settled on the island during the 18th century and made their living from collecting tree resin for shipbuilding. This settlement lasted until the end of the 20th century, when residents eventually left the island.
The island contains Jokotovi Cave, where the first Zanki settlers established themselves as resin collectors for ship maintenance.
The island is reachable only by private boat, as there are no natural sheltered bays or public transportation. The crossing should be planned in calm weather, and visitors should arrive fully self-sufficient.
The island serves as a breeding ground for the rare Eleonora's falcons, with several dozen pairs nesting there regularly. This bird population makes it an important location for avian conservation in the Adriatic.
