Sveta Marija na Škriljinah, Gothic church in Beram, Croatia.
Sveta Marija na Škriljinah is a Gothic church sitting on a hilltop with a portico entrance, bell gable, and a wooden interior ceiling. The interior is covered with extensive frescoes created by multiple artists in the 15th century.
The extensive fresco decoration was completed in 1474 by Master Vincent from Kastav along with two other artists. This artistic work established the church as a record of medieval craftsmanship in the region.
The west wall features a medieval Dance of Death fresco showing skeletons dancing with people from different social ranks, including a pope and a king. This scene reflects a common medieval message about how death comes for everyone, regardless of status.
To view the interior of the church, you will need to arrange access in advance since it is typically locked. Planning your visit ahead of time ensures you can actually enter and see the frescoes inside.
The north wall holds an Adoration of the Magi scene that spans the entire upper section and is considered Master Vincent's finest work. This large-scale composition demonstrates the artist's exceptional skill and vision.
