The Archaeological Museum Split displays objects from different periods, beginning with prehistoric times and continuing through the early Middle Ages. The collection includes Roman sculptures, ancient coins, inscriptions, and other artifacts recovered from the surrounding region.
The museum was established in 1820 when local authorities decided to gather archaeological finds from the area. Its initial collection grew from inscribed tablets discovered in the ruins of Solin.
The museum maintains collections from Salona, Issa, and Narona, presenting artifacts that demonstrate the development of Mediterranean civilizations through different periods.
Plan to spend adequate time exploring the different collection areas and outdoor spaces. Arriving early helps avoid crowds, and comfortable walking shoes are recommended since there is substantial ground to cover.
The collection contains more than 70,000 ancient and medieval coins from different cultures, revealing how trade flourished in the region. The lapidarium area with its arcades offers a quiet space for viewing stone inscriptions and sculptures.
