Mečenčani, Settlement in Donji Kukuruzari, Croatia
Mečenčani is a settlement in the Donji Kukuruzari area of Sisak-Moslavina County, defined by a neoclassical church built in the mid-1800s. The area spreads across rural land with typical southeastern European village structures and scattered homesteads.
The village was shaped in the mid-1800s by church construction and was part of a border region under Austro-Hungarian rule. After 1991, its population changed significantly during the transition to the modern Croatian state.
The Church of the Intercession of the Theotokos shapes the village with its neoclassical design, showing how Orthodox tradition is practiced here. The icons inside come from another local church and reflect the connections between communities in the region.
The village is best reached by car, as it sits in a rural area without public transport. The nearest larger town is Hrvatska Kostajnica, several kilometers away, which offers access to services and supplies.
Following the 2020 earthquake, numerous sinkholes formed in the area, changing the landscape and showing how natural disasters shape rural surroundings. These depressions are visible reminders of the natural event and reveal the power of geological processes.
