Rudolf barracks, Military complex in Črnomerec, Croatia.
The Rudolf barracks is a large military complex in Črnomerec featuring a grand central structure with four auxiliary buildings arranged symmetrically along Prilaz Avenue in Zagreb. The main structure stands prominently at the western end of the avenue, marking a clear boundary between central Zagreb and the residential district.
The complex was built between 1888 and 1889 under Khuen Hedervary's administration and named after Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria. It reflects Zagreb's architectural development during the Austro-Hungarian period.
The site now serves as a hub for government offices, housing the Croatian Ministry of Environmental Protection and other state functions. Visitors can see how the former military grounds have been repurposed for civilian administrative work.
The barracks stands at the western end of Prilaz Avenue and is easily accessible when traveling from central Zagreb toward Črnomerec district. The buildings can be viewed from outside, though it now functions as a government administrative site.
After the removal of surrounding walls in 1978, portions of the former barracks grounds were transformed into public parks, including Franjo Tuđman Square. This conversion blends military heritage with contemporary urban space.
