The Venetian Works of defence between 15th and 17th centuries

The Venetian Works of Defence form a network of walls, bastions, and moats spread across multiple cities including Bergamo, Peschiera del Garda, and Palmanova. The structures display different building styles and improvements made over roughly two centuries as military strategies evolved.

These fortifications were built between the 15th and 17th centuries as Venice defended its land borders against Ottoman threats and other European powers. They were gradually expanded and updated to withstand new military technologies, especially artillery.

These fortifications reflect how the Venetian Republic protected its territories through military design and engineering. Walking through them, you notice the careful arrangement of walls and bastions that shaped how people lived and defended their homes.

The fortifications are spread across three main cities and can be explored on foot or through guided tours. It helps to plan which sites you want to visit beforehand, as you cannot comfortably see all of them in a single day.

The fortress at Peschiera del Garda has a five-sided shape and sits directly on the lakeshore, where water and land defenses met. This layout was unusual because it protected against attacks from both the water and the land at the same time.
