Cappella Colleoni, Renaissance chapel in Città Alta, Bergamo, Italy
Cappella Colleoni is a Renaissance burial site in the upper part of Bergamo, designed with geometric patterns in white, red, and black. The entrance is topped by a rose window, while the facade is crafted from colored marble.
Giovanni Antonio Amadeo began construction in 1472 as the final wish of military leader Bartolomeo Colleoni, who fought for Venice. Completion occurred four years later, shortly after Colleoni had passed away.
The commander's burial monument stands at the center of the room and shows the power he held during his lifetime. The marble sarcophagus carries decorations with coats of arms and symbols from his military career.
Access to the chapel is free, with viewing hours in the morning and afternoon. The building stands next to the basilica and forms part of Piazza Vecchia in the historic core of Bergamo.
Researchers opened the burial site in 1969 and discovered Colleoni's remains in a wooden coffin beneath a plaster cover. This discovery surprised many, as people were not certain before whether his body was actually there.
