Campanone, Bell tower in Città Alta, Bergamo, Italy.
The Campanone stands 52.76 meters tall in Piazza Vecchia and houses Lombardy's largest historical bell, weighing approximately 5.5 tonnes with a diameter of 213 centimeters.
Construction began in the mid-12th century by the Suardi-Colleoni family as a defensive tower and private residence, later becoming public property in the 13th century.
Every evening at 10 pm, the great bell rings 100 times to commemorate the historical closure of the city gates during Venetian rule.
Visitors can access the tower through guided tours using an elevator installed in the 1960s, with tickets available for combined visits to multiple heritage sites.
The main bell was cast in 1656 by Bartolomeo Pesenti after multiple failed attempts due to mould explosions and broken bells during the challenging casting process.
