Baptistry, Bergamo, Religious octagonal structure in Città Alta, Bergamo, Italy
The Baptistry is an octagonal structure from the 14th century located on Piazza del Duomo in Città Alta. Its walls are decorated with eight bas-reliefs depicting biblical scenes created by the artist Giovanni da Campione.
The structure was originally built in 1340 as part of the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore. Over the centuries it was moved several times before reaching its current location next to the cathedral in 1899.
The name comes from its role as the city's baptismal chapel. Inside, visitors can still see the original furnishings and religious artworks that shaped daily worship practices for the community over centuries.
The building sits directly on the square where other significant churches and chapels are located, making it easy to find. The square is accessible via several streets with stairs and is located in the old town on a hilltop.
The eight bas-reliefs on the inner walls show religious stories crafted from different perspectives to bring biblical narratives to life. This medieval craftsmanship reveals the high artistic skill that existed in this region around 1340.
