The Museo e tesoro della Cattedrale is a museum beneath Bergamo's Cathedral that displays religious objects and archaeological finds from different periods. The exhibition spreads across several rooms, revealing layers of the city's past.
The museum documents remains of a 5th-century cathedral that was later rebuilt in the 15th century under architect Antonio Averlino's direction. This transformation shows how Bergamo adapted its religious center to new times.
The collection displays precious liturgical items that generations of worshippers used during religious celebrations. These objects tell the story of the city's devotion and artistic skill across the centuries.
Access is from the north side of the cathedral, where stairs lead down to the underground spaces. Wear comfortable shoes and check opening times in advance, as the museum has limited visiting days.
Excavations between 2004 and 2012 uncovered Roman houses and paved streets beneath the cathedral from around the time of Christ's birth. These findings show that this spot has been a place of human activity for over 2000 years.
