Benedictine abbey in Vértesszentkereszt

The abbey ruins stand within dense woodland, located 2 kilometers north of Gerencsérvár, featuring white stone walls and architectural elements from multiple periods.

The monastery, first documented in 1146, received substantial development in the early 13th century under the patronage of the influential Csák family members.

The three-nave basilica layout with eastern orientation and transept reflected the dedication to the Holy Cross, incorporating both Romanesque and early Gothic elements.

Archaeological excavations between 1964 and 1971 revealed the church foundations, measuring 32.5 meters in length and 16 meters in width.

Several carved stone details from the abbey were later integrated into a constructed ruin within the Esterházy family estate in nearby Tata.
