Zsolnay Mausoleum, Neo-Roman mausoleum in Pécs, Hungary.
The Zsolnay Mausoleum is a Neo-Roman structure on a hilltop in Pécs, featuring a green glazed ceramic dome and an unglazed pyrogranite exterior. Inside, a chamber holds a central sarcophagus within the vault, with a chapel located above.
Built between 1901 and 1913, the mausoleum was constructed for Vilmos Zsolnay, founder of the renowned ceramic factory. The structure underwent major restoration in the 2000s, returning it to its original appearance.
The interior was designed by sculptor Sándor Apáti Abt and features a glass dome opening, Roman columns, and walls decorated with blue skies and golden stars. This artistic space creates a solemn setting that honors the memory of those buried here.
The mausoleum sits on a hilltop with well-maintained pathways and a lion statue at the entrance. Visiting the interior requires planning ahead, so checking access details beforehand will help you make the most of your visit.
The sarcophagus chamber can be viewed from above through a glass opening in the chapel and from below in the vault, creating a two-level viewing system rarely seen in mausoleums. This unusual design offers visitors a chance to experience the burial space from different angles.
