Visegrád, Medieval castle town on the Danube Bend, Hungary

Visegrád is a town on the Danube Bend in Hungary, roughly 40 km north of Budapest on the right bank of the river. The settlement stretches from the riverfront up to the forested hills and includes both modern residential areas and historic ruins on the heights.

The settlement became an important border post and royal residence during the reign of King Charles I from 1325 onward. The complex later fell into decay after the Ottoman conquest and remained largely uninhabited for centuries.

The name comes from the Slavic word for high fortress and refers to its position above the river. Visitors today encounter craftspeople in period costume and can watch old guilds at work.

The climb to the upper fortress takes about 30 to 45 minutes and follows forested paths with steep sections. Sturdy footwear is advisable as the trails can become slippery after rain.

The palace cellars still show remains of 15th-century underfloor heating. The system used warm air circulating through channels beneath the stone floors.
