National Theatre of Győr, Theatre and theatrical group in Győr, Hungary.
The National Theatre of Győr is a theatre building and company in the city center of Győr, Hungary, with two performance halls of different sizes. The larger hall hosts operas, operettas, and musicals, while the smaller one is used for plays and more chamber-style productions.
Before the current building was constructed, the company performed for decades in a converted dairy building that had been adapted into a theatre in 1937. The new purpose-built structure was completed in 1978 and gave the company its first proper home.
For many people in Győr, going to this theatre is a regular habit rather than a special occasion. The foyer often fills with small groups talking after a show, which gives the building a social role beyond the stage itself.
The theatre is on Czuczor Gergely street and is easy to reach on foot from the city center. Arriving a little early gives you time to look at the facade before heading inside.
The outer walls are covered with Greek marble slabs and ceramic artworks made by Victor Vasarely, the artist known for founding the Op Art movement. This makes the theatre one of the very few public buildings in Hungary with artwork by an artist of international standing directly built into its exterior.
