Szeged Synagogue

Szeged Synagogue, Jewish place of worship in Szeged, Hungary.

Szeged Synagogue is a large religious building in Szeged designed with Art Nouveau and Moorish architectural elements, featuring blue, gold, and ivory interior decorations throughout. The main prayer hall accommodates worshippers on both the floor level and in upper-level galleries.

Architect Lipot Baumhorn won a design competition and completed this building in 1902 to serve Szeged's growing Jewish community. Its construction marked an important moment for Jewish institutions expanding in the city.

Hebrew inscriptions on interior columns speak to Jewish values like work, good deeds, and education, visible throughout the main prayer hall. These texts give the space its spiritual character and connect visitors to a living faith tradition.

The building is located on Josika Street 10 in Szeged, and it helps to check visiting hours beforehand since services take priority. Respectful behavior and modest clothing are expected when entering, as in any active place of worship.

The Torah is protected by a door featuring hinges shaped like Hyssop plants, a subtle botanical reference with deep religious meaning. This careful craftsmanship weaves ancient temple symbolism into the building's design.
