Votive Church of Szeged, Roman Catholic cathedral in Szeged, Hungary
The Votive Church is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Szeged built from red brick in the Romanesque Revival style. Two towers rise from the facade and shape the cityscape with their slender silhouettes.
After the devastating flood of 1879, citizens promised to build this church, but work only started in 1913. Consecration took place in 1930 after long years of construction.
The name originates from a vow made by residents after the flood, and today worshippers gather for masses and organ concerts inside. Stained glass windows tell biblical stories that visitors can observe while walking through the nave.
Visitors can reach the building in central Szeged easily on foot and join guided tours offered at certain times. The cathedral remains accessible for services and musical events.
This house of worship is the only cathedral Hungary built in the 20th century. It ranks among the five tallest religious buildings in the country.
