Grassalkovich Mansion, Baroque castle in Gödöllő, Hungary
The Grassalkovich Mansion is a Baroque estate in Gödöllő with two symmetrical wings arranged in a U-shape. The building contains a grand hall, royal apartments, and was later expanded to include stables, a chapel, and a stone theater.
Construction began in 1735 under Count Antal Grassalkovich I. The estate later became the preferred residence of Queen Elisabeth and underwent several phases of renovation over the following decades.
The name comes from the family who built and occupied the estate in the 18th century. Today visitors can walk through restored rooms that show how the nobility lived, with period furniture and decorations still in place.
The mansion is located about 30 kilometers from Budapest and is reachable by train. It is best to visit early in the day to avoid crowds and explore the rooms at a comfortable pace.
Inside stands Europe's only reconstructed Baroque theater with original stage machinery from the 18th century. This theater was carefully restored to show how performances took place in that era.
