Hattyúház Building

Hattyúház is a classical building with vaulted interior ceilings and harmonious architectural proportions from the early 1800s. The structure displays a central pediment and refined details characteristic of its historical period.

The structure was built in 1819 and 1820 when commissioned by János Mayerhoffer and quickly became a notable inn. The father of poet Sándor Petőfi later rented it for several years, giving the place literary connections.

The building takes its name from the swan emblem that once decorated its facade, referencing its past as a historic inn. It now serves as the municipal library and anchors the cultural life of the square.

The building is located at Szent János Square 9 and is well served by public transportation routes. Visitors should note it functions as a working public building with regular operating hours to observe.

A striking golden mushroom ornament crowns the roofline of the structure and has long defined the local skyline. This distinctive roof decoration remains one of the most recognizable elements when viewing the building from afar.
