The József Katona Theatre features neo-baroque ornaments and portrait sculptures of Hungarian cultural figures Károly Kisfaludy and József Katona on its facade.
The theatre opened in 1896 with a performance of Bánk bán, starring notable Hungarian actors Mari Jászai, Emília Márkus, and Ede Ujhazi.
The venue presents over 350 performances each season, including drama, comedy, musical, operetta, and opera productions for an audience exceeding 100,000 people.
The theatre maintains two additional performance spaces: the Kelemen László Chamber Theatre at Rákóczi út 15 and Ruszt József Studio Theatre at Katona József tér 10.
International stars Richard Burton and Maximilian Schell filmed at this location, which served as a setting for movies including Mephisto and Being Julie.
