Basilica of Our Lady of Assumption, Mátraverebély-Szentkút

The Basilica of Our Lady of Assumption stands in a valley within the Cserhát region and is accompanied by a Franciscan monastery and an outdoor altar for mass celebrations. The complex features multiple religious structures spread across the grounds.

The site gained prominence in the 18th century after papal approval of healings at the sacred well drew pilgrims in large numbers. This recognition established it as an important pilgrimage destination in the region.

The basilica draws visitors from multiple countries and maintains a long tradition of conducting services and prayers in several languages. This practice unites people from Slovakia, Hungary, and beyond at a shared place of worship.

The complex has an information center, gift shop, and marked hiking trails connecting to natural features in the valley. Comfortable shoes are recommended since the terrain is hilly and exploring the grounds requires walking.

Ancient hermit caves used as chapels from the 13th to 18th centuries remain accessible to visitors on the upper grounds. These caves offer a direct look at medieval worship practices at the site.
