Hermit caves of Szentkút

The network of caves carved into soft sandstone contains multiple chambers that served as living spaces and chapels for religious practitioners over centuries.

The caves provided shelter for hermits from the 13th century until 1767, when the last resident, Jozafát Dobát, passed away in this mountain sanctuary.

The caves form part of a larger religious site that includes the Mátraverebély-Szentkút Basilica, attracting more than 200,000 pilgrims each year.

Visitors can reach the caves through a marked path from the priory, with free admission throughout the year and nearby rest areas offering valley views.

The caves connect to the Saint Ladislaus Spring, which emerged according to local records when a medieval Hungarian king's horse landed after jumping across a chasm.
