Maconka Reservoir, Stausee in Ungarn
Maconka Reservoir is a body of water in Bátonyterenye, Hungary, located at the foot of the Mátra Mountains and serving as the largest standing water in Nógrád County. The shallow waters average about 1.7 meters deep with banks lined by reeds, water lilies, and willow trees.
The reservoir was built in the 1970s as part of a flood control project and began operating in 1977 to reduce flooding risks from the Zagyva River. Over the decades it evolved to supply drinking water for Bátonyterenye and became a center for sport fishing starting in 2007.
The reservoir holds special meaning for local anglers who have fished here for generations, sharing techniques and stories about their catches. It serves as a gathering place for a community that values patience and connection to nature.
The reservoir is easily accessible from the center of Bátonyterenye via main roads and has parking areas, restrooms, and picnic spots along the shore. Visitors can spend the entire day here, with fishing enthusiasts bringing their own equipment and waiting patiently for catches.
The reservoir is known for holding large carp weighing more than 30 kilograms, attracting anglers seeking a real challenge. An annual Big Carp Cup competition draws many visitors, creating a lively fishing event before returning to its peaceful rhythm.
