Galya-kilátó, Observation tower in Mátraszentimre, Hungary
Galya-kilátó is an observation tower in Mátraszentimre that rises 30 meters tall at an elevation of 955 meters above sea level. The structure offers views across the surrounding Mátra mountain landscape.
The tower was built in 1934 from local andesite stone and received major renovation in 2016 to address trees that had grown and obstructed the views. This restoration modernized the structure while preserving the traditional stone walls.
The tower forms a key point along the Blue national tourist route, a 1100-kilometer path that connects numerous hiking destinations in Northern Hungary.
Inside the tower are three shelters, each accommodating up to six people and featuring wooden pallets plus round windows for natural light. Access is straightforward, and the structure provides protection in changing weather.
Steel stairs are encased in stainless steel mesh, blending traditional andesite walls with modern design elements. This combination of old and new materials makes the structure architecturally noteworthy.
