Mátra Múzeum, Natural history museum in Gyöngyös, Hungary.
Mátra Múzeum is a natural history museum in Gyöngyös arranged across three distinct areas: Orczy Castle, the Natural History Pavilion, and a 2-hectare nature reserve with botanical collections. These sections stand together, forming one unified site for visitors to explore.
The building started as a Baroque castle in 1769 and was redesigned in the Classicist style during 1826. It became this museum in 1957 and has since served the community as a place for learning about regional nature and history.
The museum displays objects connected to hunting traditions, minerals, and prehistoric creatures that reveal how people have lived and interacted with their surroundings across the region. These collections give insight into daily life and the relationship communities had with nature over time.
The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday and welcomes visitors to explore all three sections at their own pace in any order. It helps to allow time for both the outdoor park and the indoor displays.
Inside the Natural History Pavilion stands an ancient oak tree surrounded by dioramas showing different landscapes and habitats found across the region. This arrangement creates an unusual link between a living tree and the displayed natural scenes.
