Kékes

Kékes is the highest mountain in Hungary and sits within the Mátra mountain range in Heves County. The summit plateau provides open views in all directions across the surrounding mountain landscape.

Kékes became Hungary's highest peak following the Treaty of Trianon in 1920, when border changes affected which mountains belonged to the country. This shift in territory made it the nation's dominant geographic summit.

The mountain features multiple skiing pistes that attract winter sports participants, while also serving as a prominent stage in the Tour de Hongrie cycling race.

A paved road connects the summit to the village of Mátraháza, making vehicle access straightforward and convenient. The route is well marked and accessible year-round, though winter weather may occasionally require extra care.

A television tower built in 1981 stands on the summit and functions both as a broadcast facility and as an observation platform for visitors. The structure dominates the hilltop and adds extra height for even wider views.
