Castle of Kisnána, Medieval castle ruins in Kisnána, Hungary
Castle of Kisnána is a medieval fortress on a hilltop in Kisnána, Hungary, with stone walls, a central tower, and a Gothic chapel. The site is spread across several levels, including underground chambers that are open to visitors.
The castle was founded in the 13th century by the Kompolti family as a noble residence. It was later reinforced and used as a military stronghold during conflicts between Hungarian and Ottoman forces.
The museum shows objects from medieval Hungary that belonged to noble families, from household tools to decorative pieces. Walking through the rooms gives a sense of how people at that level of society furnished and used their living spaces.
The castle is open from April to October, with guided tours available in Hungarian and English. A 3D projection room inside the site helps visitors understand the layout and the history of the place before exploring on their own.
The grounds contain graves from the 12th century, predating the castle itself and showing the site was used long before it became a fortress. These burials suggest the hill already held some local importance well before noble families built on it.
