Heves County, Administrative county in Northern Hungary
Heves County is an administrative division in Northern Hungary that extends from the Tisza River to the Mátra and Bükk mountains, encompassing both upland and flat terrain. The area is divided into seven administrative districts, with Eger serving as the administrative center.
The territory was established as a county in the 13th century and experienced major changes under Ottoman rule from 1596 to 1687. Following Habsburg recapture, the region developed into an important cultural center in Northern Hungary.
The region is known for its wine culture, especially around Eger and the slopes of the Mátra Mountains, where visitors find traditional vineyards and wineries. Local wine festivals and tastings are part of everyday life and blend tradition with modern tourism.
The region is easiest to explore by car, as towns and villages are spread throughout the area. Eger works well as a base and offers good connections to other locations in the region.
Hungary's highest peak, Mount Kékes in the Mátra Mountains, sits within the county's borders. Hikers often visit this summit for its observation towers and panoramic views across the landscape.
