Lake Tisza, Artificial reservoir in Heves County, Hungary.
This reservoir lies in Heves County, Hungary, spreading across a wide area with numerous islands, connecting channels and shallow zones scattered throughout its waters. The waterscape forms a branching system that winds through the eastern part of the country, marked by reed beds and open stretches of water.
Construction of the dam at Kisköre began in 1973 to control flooding along the Tisza River. Impounding the river created this branching waterway over several years, forming what is now perceived as a single reservoir.
The ecocentre in Poroszló houses Europe's largest freshwater aquarium, where visitors see species that live in the shallow waters and channels around the area. Displays recreate the conditions of the surrounding wetlands, showing fish, plants and invertebrates found throughout the nearby waterways.
The wooden water promenade extends roughly 1,500 meters and opens from April to October, allowing visitors to walk along the boardwalks and observe wildlife. Access is usually from Poroszló, where facilities help orient visitors arriving to explore the wetland surroundings.
More than 40 small islands lie within the waters, forming a maze of channels that can be explored by boat. Some islands are only a few meters wide and shift over the years through current and vegetation growth.
