Szabadság Cave, Natural cave in Égerszög, Hungary.
Szabadság Cave is a natural cave in Égerszög with an extensive underground system running through varied rock formations. The system contains multiple chambers and passages of different sizes, ranging from very narrow sections to larger open areas.
The cave was discovered in 1954 by the Balázs Dénes Cave Research Group, who found the entrance through the Dász sinkhole. This discovery began systematic exploration of the underground system.
The name Szabadság means Freedom and reflects a deep connection to Hungarian values. Visitors sense this symbolic meaning while moving through the underground passages and connecting with the place's significance.
Access to the cave requires permission from Aggtelek National Park Administration, and visitors should prepare for tight passages in places. Sturdy footwear and a flashlight are essential for safely navigating through the underground passages.
A special section is the Giant Hall, where underground water from Kecske-kút flows beneath the surface and becomes visible during spring snowmelt or heavy rain. This seasonal water feature makes the cave a dynamic environment that changes throughout the year.
