Uránia National Movie Theater, Historic movie theater in District VIII, Budapest, Hungary
The Uránia National Movie Theater is a cinema in Budapest with elaborate Moorish Revival architecture that combines Gothic and Renaissance elements. The building contains three screening halls, including one large auditorium and two additional modern screening rooms.
The building was originally constructed in 1894 as a live theater called Alhambra and converted into a permanent cinema in 1916. During the 1930s it was managed by Ufa, establishing its role as a major entertainment venue in Budapest.
The theater shows a mix of classic and modern international films that appeal to film lovers and school groups alike. Its screening spaces host film festivals and independent movie premieres throughout the year.
The cinema is located at Rakoczi Street 21 in central Budapest and features two cafes for visitors. One cafe with Indian decor is situated in the basement, while another is found on the first floor.
The main hall preserves its original Moorish architectural details from 1894 and creates a rare blend between classical theater space and modern cinema. This unusual combination of old character and new function makes the venue a timeless cultural space.
