Beremend Crystal Cave

Beremend Crystal Cave is a cave system beneath the southern Hungarian village with multiple chambers, shafts, and passages. The network was shaped by warm karst water flowing through the rock over thousands of years.

The cave was discovered in 1984 during limestone extraction work and received protected status in 1988. Since then it has been managed as a natural monument under government protection.

Research teams have discovered Pleistocene-era remains, including complete saber-toothed tiger fossils and previously unknown species of wild sheep.

A visit requires advance permission from the National Park administration. Wear clean clothes and rely on the provided electric lighting to safely navigate the passages.

The cave water stays warm year-round at a comfortable temperature, making it unusual among most European caves. Fine crystal formations grow in the pools and along the walls, giving the system its distinctive name.
