Port of Kuala Tanjung, International seaport in Batu Bara, Indonesia
The Port of Kuala Tanjung is a multipurpose seaport in Batu Bara, North Sumatra, built to handle both container ships and bulk cargo vessels. It has several berths and a large terminal area supported by cranes, warehouses, and road connections serving the surrounding industrial zone.
The port was built in the 2010s to give North Sumatra a direct outlet to international shipping lanes and reduce reliance on ports farther away. Commercial operations began in 2018, making it one of Indonesia's newest cargo gateways.
The port is closely tied to the coal and palm oil trade of North Sumatra, and visitors can watch trucks and cargo vessels moving in a steady flow that keeps the facility running around the clock. This constant movement reflects how much the surrounding region depends on maritime commerce for its everyday economy.
The port sits on Sumatra's east coast and can be reached by road from Medan in roughly two hours. Since it is an active industrial site, visitors must follow safety rules and access to some areas requires prior authorization.
The Port of Kuala Tanjung is part of a larger planned industrial zone that includes a smelter and power facilities built right next to the terminal. This makes it one of the few ports in the world where heavy manufacturing and shipping infrastructure were designed together from the start.
