River Shannon, Major river in central Ireland

The Shannon is a river in central Ireland that runs approximately 386 kilometers (240 miles) from County Cavan to the Atlantic Ocean near Limerick, connecting three large lakes along its course. The waterway forms the longest river system in the country, with numerous locks and small harbors along its wooded and open shoreline sections.

Vikings sailed the waterway during the tenth century to raid inland settlements, establishing several bases along the banks. Later the system developed into a main trade route for merchant vessels and turf barges carrying goods between coastal towns and interior communities.

The waterway takes its name from Sionann, a figure in Irish mythology who sought ancient wisdom at the source but drowned in the flowing waters. Today walkers and cyclists follow the old towpath along the banks, where horses once pulled cargo barges through the locks.

The waterway allows boats to travel from the Atlantic to Lough Allen through interconnected lakes and canals with several dozen locks. Most towpaths are accessible for walking or cycling, though some sections along private land offer limited public access points.

The hydroelectric station at Ardnacrusha was built during the 1920s as one of the first large engineering projects of independent Ireland and still supplies power to households today. Some of the locks along the waterway date from the early 18th century, making them older than similar structures in many other European canal systems.
