Moneygall, village in County Offaly, Ireland
Moneygall is a small village in County Offaly on the border with Tipperary, situated along the R445 road that connects Dublin and Limerick. It contains a Catholic church, a national school, a post office, a small shop, and a Garda station that serve the local community of around 310 people.
The village's name, Muine Gall in Irish, means 'foreigners' thicket', reflecting its long history as a gathering place for different groups. It gained worldwide recognition when Falmouth Kearney emigrated in 1850 to the United States, becoming the great-great-great-grandfather of U.S. President Barack Obama.
The village is easily accessible by car via Junction 23 of the M7 motorway and lies along the R445 road. Bus services connect it to larger towns like Nenagh and Roscrea, while the nearest train stations are in those same towns and Shannon Airport is roughly 50 kilometers away.
The village gained international fame in 2011 when President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle visited and were greeted by about 5,000 locals. In 2014, the Barack Obama Plaza opened at Junction 23 of the M7 motorway with a bronze statue of the President and First Lady commemorating this connection.
