Killahara castle, Medieval tower house in Dovea Upper Townland, Thurles, Ireland
Killahara is a five-story stone tower with thick walls, narrow windows for defense, and a spiral staircase that climbs to the top level. The structure has been carefully restored in recent years with a new roof installed.
Donagh O'Fogartie built this tower in 1550 as the stronghold of his clan in the area. In 1649, Cromwellian forces stripped away the roof and forced the inhabitants to abandon it.
The Gaelic inscription 'Fleadh agus Failte' decorates the castle walls, representing the O'Fogartie clan's tradition of celebrations and hospitality.
The thick stone walls provide natural protection from temperature changes throughout the year. A daytime visit works best since natural light helps you navigate the narrow spiral staircase safely.
During the 1980s, a cow climbed the spiral staircase and lived on the upper floor for about a year and a half before eventually leaving. This unusual event has become part of the site's local story.
