Canon Island, River island near Kildysart, Ireland
Canon Island is a river island where the Shannon and Fergus rivers meet, featuring productive farmland and seaweed growth along its shores. The island sits roughly 2.5 kilometers east of Kildysart village and requires water access to reach.
An Augustinian monastery was established on the island in the late 1100s and continued to operate until its dissolution in the 16th century. The religious community that lived here was part of the medieval monastic movement across the region.
The ruins of a medieval priory stand in the northeastern part of the island, showing the square tower and stone structures that remain from an Augustinian community. Visitors can walk among these remains and sense the spiritual importance this place held for religious life.
Reaching the island requires boat access since it is surrounded by water. Wear suitable footwear for uneven ground and be prepared for potentially wet or muddy conditions along the shores.
Beginning in 1990, descendants of families and local residents have gathered on the island for annual celebrations and religious services held in summer. This gathering tradition reconnects people to the site's spiritual heritage.
