Coolock, large suburb of Dublin, Ireland
Coolock is a large suburb on Dublin's north side comprising residential neighborhoods, parks, and community facilities spread across multiple districts. The area includes sections such as Ayrfield, Bonnybrook, Darndale, and Priorswood with a mix of houses, flats, and semi-detached homes at more affordable prices than other city areas.
Coolock has been inhabited for over 3500 years, with a Bronze Age burial site dating to approximately 1500 BC still visible in the area. The village developed around an early Christian church and was later controlled by Norman families such as the Nugents, remaining primarily agricultural until the 1950s when large housing estates transformed it into a modern suburb.
Coolock derives its name from Irish origins and reflects a neighborhood where residents maintain strong community ties through local clubs and gatherings. The area's identity centers on family life and participation in sports organizations that have served the community for generations.
The area is accessible from Dublin city center by car in approximately 18 minutes or by bus in around 15 minutes, with frequent bus routes connecting the neighborhoods to the city. Multiple parks offer walking paths, sports facilities, a shopping center, and swimming pool for residents and visitors.
Stardust Memorial Park was created to honor victims of a 1981 nightclub fire that claimed many lives in the area. The park with its streams, ponds, and walking paths serves as a place where the community remembers this event and finds reflection and peace.
