Stardust Memorial Park, Memorial park in Coolock, Ireland
Stardust Memorial Park occupies about 26 acres next to the Santry River and creates a green refuge in the urban area. The centerpiece includes a fountain with sculpture, 48 memorial pillars, play areas, sports facilities, and walking routes through landscaped gardens.
The land served as a monastic settlement in the 12th century long before becoming this memorial space. The park opened in 1993 as a response to the nightclub fire tragedy that had taken place a decade earlier.
The fountain sculpture at the center depicts two dancers and serves as a memorial to those lost in the 1981 nightclub fire. For local residents, the site provides a quiet space to reflect on this tragedy that affected their community.
The park is open to the public with ample green space for walking and relaxing throughout. Different zones for sports, play, and gardens allow visitors to choose routes that match their interests.
The park contains around 8000 trees of different species including maple, lime, oak, and beech that create a dense canopy overhead. This planting transforms the site into a surprisingly wooded environment despite its urban location.
