Morton Stadium, Athletic stadium in Santry, Ireland
Morton Stadium is an athletics venue in Santry, a northern suburb of Dublin, built around a World Athletics certified 400-meter track with 8 lanes and 10 lanes on the 100-meter finish straight. The grounds also contain four outdoor long jump pits, throwing areas, and an indoor gym used for strength and conditioning work.
The stadium came to international attention in 1958 when Australian runner Herb Elliott set a world record for the mile on this track. Decades later, it hosted athletics events during the 2003 Special Olympics World Games.
Morton Stadium is home to the Clonliffe Harriers athletics club, one of the oldest in Ireland. On any given day, runners and field athletes of all levels can be seen training side by side on the track and surrounding areas.
The venue sits in Santry and is easy to reach from central Dublin. Since most of the facilities are outdoors, bringing weatherproof clothing is a good idea, especially during cooler months.
The world record Herb Elliott set here in 1958 stood for more than a decade, which was an unusually long time for a track event at that level. The run put this particular track on the radar of middle-distance runners around the world long before the area was widely known.
