Markree Observatory, Astronomical observatory in County Sligo, Ireland
The Markree Observatory stands at an elevation of 44 meters and contains multiple telescopes for studying celestial objects and astronomical phenomena.
Colonel Edward Joshua Cooper established the observatory in 1830, acquiring a 13.5-inch telescope objective from Paris that became the largest in the world.
The observatory contributed to astronomical research through a catalog of 60,000 stars created during the 1850s and the discovery of asteroid 9 Metis.
The facility incorporated various instruments including a 5-foot transit, a 3-foot Meridian Circle, and a 4-inch Comet Seeker for different observation purposes.
The observatory operated without a protective dome initially, with its main telescope exposed to weather conditions until later structural improvements were made.
