Kells

Kells is a medieval settlement in County Meath that contains several religious structures from the early medieval period, including a round tower, Celtic crosses, and St. Columba's House. The buildings and monuments are scattered throughout the town, showcasing the architectural variety from its founding era.

Monks fleeing Viking raids from the island of Iona settled here in the early 9th century and established a monastery. This founding marked the beginning of a series of constructions that transformed the settlement into a major religious center.

The Market Cross displays carved biblical scenes and stands as a focal point in the town center, reflecting the deep Christian tradition that shaped this place. The religious imagery on its surface tells stories that have been part of local identity for over a thousand years.

The town lies about 65 kilometers north of Dublin and is easily accessible by main roads. Visitors should arrive early in the season to explore the monuments at a relaxed pace without the midday crowds.

The round tower here has five windows at its summit instead of the typical four, with an extra window looking down onto the main road below. This uncommon feature sets it apart from similar towers elsewhere in Ireland.
