Tallaght, Urban settlement in South Dublin, Ireland

Tallaght is a settlement in South Dublin, Ireland, situated to the west of the capital city center. The district spreads across gently rising hills with wide roads, multi-story residential blocks, and several commercial zones serving the local population.

The monk Maelruain founded a monastery here in 769, which grew into an important religious center over the following centuries. During the second half of the 20th century, the formerly rural village transformed into a densely populated district.

Residents often meet at the library, theater, and arts center grouped around the central square, where cultural programs and exhibitions take place throughout the week. The local community gathers in these shared spaces, making them visible focal points in everyday life.

Several bus lines run regularly between this area and the Dublin city center, providing access to different parts of the capital. Shopping centers, parks, and public facilities lie within walking distance of each other and are easy to reach.

Early Irish texts mention this location as a burial site, reflected in the name támh-leacht. Today, little visible evidence remains of this original meaning, as the landscape has changed fundamentally over many centuries.
