Bushy Park, Dublin, Public park in Terenure, Ireland
Bushy Park is a park in the Terenure area of Dublin, featuring woodland areas, walking trails that follow the River Dodder, two ponds, and sports facilities. It sits on the south side of the city and can be entered from several points along its perimeter.
The grounds started as a private estate around 1700 under Arthur Bushe and took the name they carry today in 1772 when John Hobson bought the property. It was later taken over by Dublin City and opened to the public during the 20th century.
The Saturday market brings together local food producers and craftspeople who set up stalls while musicians perform nearby, drawing neighbors from across Terenure into the grounds. It takes place regularly and gives the park a role at the heart of community life that goes well beyond a simple green space.
Opening times vary with the season, with later closing hours in summer and earlier ones in winter, so it is worth checking before visiting in the evening. Several entry points are dotted around the park, and the main paths are easy to follow without a map.
Kingfishers, sparrowhawks, and treecreepers are regularly spotted near the ponds and along the river, making those areas particularly rewarding for anyone who takes the time to stop and look. For a park sitting inside a city, the variety of birds found here is quite rare.
