Tuam, Medieval settlement in County Galway, Ireland
Tuam is a settlement in County Galway in the northwest of Ireland, roughly half an hour's drive from Galway City. Two large churches shape the townscape and stand only a few streets apart in the center.
A religious center arose here in the 5th century and later grew into an important seat of the Catholic Church in Connaught. The cross in the town center was erected in the 12th century, while parts of the older church buildings remain visible today.
The name derives from Irish words meaning burial mound, pointing to early settlement traces in the area. Both churches stand close together and remain in use for services and events, so visitors can easily compare their contrasting building styles.
The local museum sits inside an old mill and displays the working mill wheel along with information about the surrounding area. You can explore the center on foot, as most points of interest lie within short walking distances.
