Blarney Stone, Mythical stone at Blarney Castle, Ireland.
The Blarney Stone is a limestone block set into the battlements of the castle tower, about 37 feet (11 meters) above the ground. The stone lies horizontally beneath the parapet, requiring visitors to lean backward to reach it.
The castle was built in 1446 by Dermot MacCarthy, and the stone became part of the fortifications during this construction. The legend of its power developed later as the lords of Blarney became known for their verbal skill.
Kissing the stone attracts people from around the world who hope to gain the gift of eloquence. Visitors treat the ceremony as a mix of tradition and playful superstition, often accompanied by laughter and mutual encouragement.
The climb involves a narrow spiral staircase with 127 steps that becomes tighter as you ascend. Staff at the top assist with the backward lean, as the position over the open gap feels awkward at first.
Originally there was no safety equipment at the spot, and visitors had to lean freely over the opening. Today metal grilles and handrails have reduced the thrill that earlier travelers experienced.
