Knockdrin Castle

Knockdrin Castle, Gothic Revival castle in Mullingar, Ireland.

Knockdrin Castle is a Gothic Revival residence near Mullingar featuring a central glazed dome and expansive south-facing windows that flood interior spaces with light. The building contains multiple reception halls with decorative columns and architectural details throughout its layout.

Sir Richard Levinge, lord lieutenant of Westmeath County, commissioned this residence around 1810 as part of the broader movement toward Gothic Revival architecture in Ireland. Its construction reflected the fashion among wealthy landowners to modernize their estates with new architectural styles.

The rooms showcase carved oak craftsmanship and were designed for hosting social gatherings and celebrations. Visitors can still see these spaces that once served as centers for entertaining guests throughout the seasons.

The estate spreads across approximately 1,050 acres with multiple outbuildings scattered throughout the grounds. Visitors should plan to spend adequate time exploring the property, as moving around on foot requires considerable walking.

The Crown Bedroom holds a footnote in British history, having hosted Winston Churchill during his youth when his parents visited for field sports. Few visitors realize this connection exists when touring the space today.
