Mullingar, County town in County Westmeath, Ireland
Mullingar is a county town in County Westmeath in central Ireland, surrounded by three large lakes that shape the local landscape. The town sits at 101 meters elevation and serves as an administrative center for the region with several public buildings along the main street.
In 1543, an act of parliament made the town the administrative seat of the newly created County Westmeath. The railway line reached the place during the 19th century, connecting it permanently with Dublin and the northwest.
The Cathedral of Christ the King shows two tall towers rising above the town, visible from many points around. Inside, mosaics by Boris Anrep draw the eye with religious scenes created during the 1930s.
Railway connections run several times daily to Dublin, bringing travelers to the capital in about an hour. Those visiting the lakes will find public access points and shore paths around Lough Ennell and Lough Owel south and north of town.
The pewter workshop in town produces bowls, jugs, and jewelry pieces that visitors can watch being cast and polished. The metal gets poured into molds and worked by hand, so each piece looks slightly different.
