County Westmeath, County in Leinster, Ireland

Westmeath sits in the central plain of Ireland and spreads across farmland, peatland and shallow waterways between Athlone and Mullingar. The countryside alternates between open fields, low hills and shorelines marked by stone walls and clusters of trees.

The division of the old Kingdom of Meath in the 16th century created a new administrative unit with Mullingar as capital. Monastic sites and early medieval ruins along the waterways show settlement before the Norman conquest.

Lakes and waterways draw anglers and boaters, while the midland crossing at Athlone forms a navigation route through the island. Smaller towns along the shores show traditional stone fronts and pubs where locals gather in the evening.

Minor roads connect villages with the two main towns and often follow lake shores, passing through open farmland. The best time to visit runs from May to September, when daylight and milder weather allow longer exploration.

The highest point reaches only 258 meters (846 feet) and remains the lowest county summit across all Irish administrative units. This flat topography makes the region one of the least mountainous parts of the island.
